Paint Storage - How To Store Paint

Proper paint storage is essential for maintaining the quality and longevity of your paint. Whether you are a professional painter or a DIY enthusiast, knowing how to store paint correctly can save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.

From choosing the right paint storage containers to utilizing paint can clips to make sure those lids are secure, here are some tips for storing paint effectively:

1. Seal the Container Properly
  • Tighten the Lid: Ensure the lid is securely fastened to prevent air from entering and drying out the paint.
  • Plastic Wrap: For extra protection, place a layer of plastic wrap over the opening before sealing with the lid.
2. Store in a Cool, Dry Place
  • Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Store paint in an environment with a stable temperature, ideally between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Avoid storing in places with extreme heat or cold, such as garages or sheds.
  • Humidity: Keep the paint away from damp areas to prevent rusting of the can and contamination of the paint.
3. Proper Positioning
  • Upright Position: Store paint cans upright to prevent leaks and spills.
  • Label the Cans: Write the paint color, date of purchase, and room it was used in on the lid or side of the can for easy identification.
4. Check Regularly
  • Inspection: Periodically check stored paint for any signs of separation, thickening, or odor, which can indicate that the paint has gone bad.
  • Stir Before Use: Always stir the paint thoroughly before using it again to ensure even consistency.
5. Use Smaller Containers
  • Transfer to Smaller Cans: If there’s only a small amount of paint left, consider transferring it to a smaller, airtight container to minimize air exposure.

6. Use The Proper Container

  • Metal Cans: Ensure the rims of metal cans are clean before sealing to prevent rusting.
  • Plastic Containers: For latex or water-based paints, consider using plastic containers that won’t rust.
  • Vacuum Sealed Bags: For very small quantities, vacuum-sealed bags can minimize air exposure.
7. Avoid Direct Sunlight
  • Shade: Store paint away from direct sunlight, which can cause the paint to deteriorate more quickly.
8. Dispose of Old Paint Properly
  • Expiration: If the paint has expired or shows signs of spoilage (foul smell, separation that doesn't mix back together, or lumps), dispose of it according to these guidelines

By following these steps, you can keep your leftover paint in good condition for touch-ups and future projects.
